Birds on Bikes
The Call of the Cuckoo
In May Dartmoor comes alive with the sound of birdsong. It is one of the few places in southern England where cuckoos and skylarks are plentiful and can be heard regularly. On this ride, we will be accompanied by wildlife guide Richard Hibbert who will help us find and identify the birds around us as we cycle across open moorland and down quiet lanes, and we will have the opportunity to leave the bikes at will to look, listen, and investigate further. At one of these stops, if the spring has been mild enough, and at a place where cuckoos often call, we will see an entire hillside of bluebells. Our route takes us past Hound and Easdon Tors, goes through the delightful villages of North Bovey and Manaton, and returns across Black Hill and above Yarner Wood. The varied flora should guarantee a wealth of birds to enjoy, and the views will be spectacular.
Saturday, May 17, 9.30 – 1.30
Starting at Haytor Information Centre. 14 miles
How much will the ride cost?
£35 per person. Includes helmets. Participants must be over 14.

We now have an incredible Walking Experience for you to try!
Prince Hall Hotel has teamed up with local wildlife expert Richard Hibbert to offer an exclusive opportunity for hotel guests. Richard is a teacher and environmental educator who has lived on Dartmoor for nearly 20 years and knows our location well. He is now offering guided walks for couples, families, groups and individuals staying at the hotel, tailored to your requirements and level of expertise. Richard’s main passion is birds, but he has a wide range of knowledge about wildlife and the landscape and how to share this with others. As a primary school teacher, he is skilled in engaging young people with nature and their surroundings, and if you go on one of his walks with your children you (and they) won’t be disappointed!
